Sports, Activities & Recreation

San Joseans are serious about sports. So serious, that they put down the video games invented in their backyard and liven sports venues and events with good-natured tribal furor.

Silicon Valley is home to a roster of high level annual sporting events, from the Amgen Tour of California to the SAP Open—one of the oldest men's professional tennis tournaments in the country. And San Jose boasts some of the region's most successful pro teams, including the NHL Sharks and the San Jose Stealth lacrosse team. The popular minor baseball league San Jose Giants is great fun, and if you define football like every country outside of the U.S., you’ll be happy to know that the San Jose Earthquakes and the FC Gold Pride (women’s soccer) wow crowds with fancy footwork each year.

Boasting 15 golf courses, some of which were created by world-famous designers, Silicon Valley is a great destination for birdies and eagles, and is close to legendary Pebble Beach courses. With 150 parks and dozens of wineries, San Jose is Nirvana for outdoor recreation, and if you can’t decide which is a higher priority – golf or wine tasting – Cinnabar and Cordoval a few minutes from San Jose offer both.

You can pretty much do it all here, including hiking, golfing, jogging, biking, wind surfing, paddle boating, picnicking, bocce, and volleyball and wine tasting overlooking coastal mountain vistas. If indoor sports are your thing, then check out bowling alleys such as the über-edgy 300 San Jose or climb the walls at places like Touchstone Climbing and Fitness San Jose, the Bay Area's premier climbing gym that focuses on bouldering.

From mega cycling sporting events and Sharks games to golf courses and jogging trails, San Jose is a great place to get in gear and stay in the game. From cycling events, hiking and mountain biking to baseball, PGA Golf Courses and our very own San Jose NHL Sharks hockey team—there are many great sports and recreational opportunities. If you prefer your action off the field, San Jose is close to great theme parks, such as Great America. Shopping is another favorite pastime, with options that let you take it easy on the wallet or go for broke.
