The San Jose Greek Festival has been held by St. Nicholas church in early June for the past 39 years. Patrons can find Greek food, music and culture at this festival. Admission is $5, or free if you go to the St. Nicholas website and print out coupons.
1. Be sure to bring cash to buy tokens for food, because all of the Greek favorites can be found here at the festival. Gyros, one of the most popular Greek foods, are abundant. A gyro consists of lamb meat, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and tzatziki sauce, wrapped in pita bread. Customers can also find lamb shank with orzo, spicy Greek sausages wrapped in pitas, Greek salads and pastitio, also known as Greek lasagna.
2. Dessert is a major attraction at the San Jose Greek Festival. Loukoumades are the most popular of the bunch. Loukomades are fried balls of dough, which is coated or soaked in honey and cinnamon. Baklava, a pastry made of thin layered dough, and flavored with honey, syrup and nuts, is also on offer.
3. Besides the food, the Greek Festival also offers a marketplace where people can buy authentic Greek arts and crafts and other gifts. Around the food vendors and marketplace, there are various performing acts and musicians playing Greek music.
