Chavez Family Home

This location is a private residence. Please travel responsibly and respect the privacy and property of this historical home and the surrounding neighborhood. No trespassing is allowed.

Located in what was originally known as the East San José barrio of “Sal Si Puedes” (get out if you can), César and Helen Chávez raised their family in this home from 1951 to 1953 while Chavez labored at nearby apricot orchards. Cesar Chavez was an American labor leader and civil rights activist who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers union, UFW) in 1962. Originally a Mexican American farm worker, Chavez became the best known Latino American civil rights activist, and was strongly promoted by the American labor movement, which was eager to enroll Hispanic members. The home is now a San Jose Historical Landmark.
