How does a day filled with redwoods, amusement parks, otter sightings and unbeatable ocean views sound? Just a short 30 minute drive from San Jose on beautiful Highway 17 will take you to just such a place! Cowell’s Beach is great for catching waves or watching the surfers, but the Santa Cruz area gives you 29 miles of beaches to choose from, including the long, white beach fronting the classic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Always fun for families; The Boardwalk offers arcades, mini-golf and lunch options in a carnival-type atmosphere. Enjoy a ride on Undertow or the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster as well as free concerts and movies on the beach during the Summer. Just inland from the coast, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Town of Felton offers up another adventure. Roaring Camp Railroad is a charming re-creation of an 1880’s logging town operating trains through towering redwood groves and over trestles for a taste of what life was like in the early days of California. Train buffs – or those who long for the times when traveling didn’t involve TSA screening or heavy highway traffic – will love the authentic 19th century steam locomotives that used to haul giant redwood logs out of the mountains.
