FALL INTO ARTS SEASON WITH

COOL CULTURAL AND SPORTING EVENTS 

 

SAN JOSE, CA (August 2, 2011) – The long days of summer may soon be over, but with the arrival of San Jose’s long-awaited arts and cultural season, the earlier nights will light up with dance, visual arts and song throughout the city.

 

“More and more travelers are discovering that San Jose is a great destination for top-notch, easy-to-access arts and cultural activities – most within walking distance or short light rail ride from their hotels,” said Bill Sherry, CEO of Team San Jose, which runs the Convention Center and Cultural Facilities. “San Jose is also becoming more known for our annual sporting events and festivals, attracting A-list events such as the Rock n’ Roll Marathon and Mexican Heritage and Mariachi Festival.  Fall also brings the arrival of the holidays, beginning with our world-famous Winchester Mystery House’s new ‘Fright Night’ tours for Halloween.”

 

Below are highlights of the many events going on throughout the city from September through November 2011 in chronicle order by category:

 

ARTS & CULTURE EVENTS

“Islamic Science Rediscovered” California Premiere Exhibit (Opens Sept. 3) – The Tech Museum

hosts the California premiere of this limited global engagement touring exhibit which celebrates the

contribution of Muslim scholars to science and technology during the Golden Age of the Islamic

World (circa 8th to 18th centuries CE) and the influence of their discoveries and inventions on

contemporary society. Visitors educated in the Western world will be surprised to learn of discoveries

and inventions in the Muslim World which predate by years, sometimes centuries, discoveries thought

to be developed in the West. The exhibition covers the main fields of Islamic scientific endeavor

including: architecture, arts, astronomy, engineering, exploration, flight, mathematics, medicine, optics

and water control. The exhibit will be at the Tech for just a few months so book now! Cost is $18.99

for adults, $13.99 for kids ages 3-17 and $16.99 for students with identification and seniors 65+.

San Pedro Square Market Grand Opening (Sept. 10) -- A new destination for shopping, dining,  and

  nightlife in Downtown San Jose, the San Pedro Square Market is scheduled to open Sept. 10,  2011.

 This revolutionary 50,000 square foot multi-use property features three Market halls filled with over 20 local

vendors selling prepared food, consumer goods, and fresh vegetables. The heart and  soul of the project is

the historic Peralta Adobe, the oldest building in San Jose. The Peralta Adobe Plaza will offer outdoor

seating where you can enjoy a morning coffee, a fabulous lunch, or an evening concert with dinner or

a cocktail. The Market will host live, family-friendly entertainment including music, storytelling, and

performances from local arts groups over 300 days a year. The Market aims to be the most vibrant

Opera San José presents Mozart’s Idomeneo: ré di Creta, California Theatre, Downtown San Jose (Sept. 10-25): Opera San José opens its 28th season with a San José premiere of Mozart’s first dramatic masterpiece, Idomeneo: ré di Creta, the mythical tale of the king of Crete set at the end of the Trojan War. 31st Annual Fall Art Auction (Sept. 24-Oct. 22) -- The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art’s (ICA) signature gala event and fundraiser features more than 175 works by the Bay Area’s hottest emerging and established artists. Events include: Silent Auction Oct. 8, 5-7 pm; and Live Auction Gala Oct. 22, doors open at 6 and auction begins at 7pm. Symphony Silicon Valley’s Holst’s Planets (Oct. 1-2) -- World music master David Amram joins the symphony at the California Theatre to perform his great Triple Concerto. With it, Maestro Polivnick will pair one of the most beloved of all symphonic works--and one SSV has not yet performed: Holst’s The Planets.  This musical interpretation of the stories told about our nearest neighbors in space is part mythology, a pinch of astronomy, and all bravura music. www.symphonysiliconvalley.org

San Jose Museum of Art’s This Kind of Bird Flies Backward: Paintings by Joan Brown (Oct. 14, 2011-March 11, 2012) -- This exhibition explores the work of this beloved and pivotal Bay Area artist in the context of the women’s movement and stakes a claim for her place in American art history. It includes many rarely seen paintings from private collections and the artist’s estate. Cost is $8 ($5 seniors, students, free to children under 6). Home & Garden Show (Oct. 21-23) -- This biannual event at the San Jose Convention Center features exhibitors from all over the San Jose area promoting home and garden goods and services, often at a discounted price.

Symphony Silicon Valley’s Petrushka & The Violin (Oct. 22-23) – The renowned Maestro Bisanti returns to the California Theatre with one of the symphony’s favorite guests, Korean violinist Ju-Young Baek. Her gift for the symphony’s Tenth Anniversary will be Beethoven’s supremely lyrical and expressive concerto.  www.symphonysiliconvalley.org 

San Jose Museum of Art’s Community Day: El Dia de los Muertos (Oct. 29, 2011) -- Celebrate the joyful holiday of El Día de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) with a day of hands-on art making, live music, dance performances, storytelling, and more from 11am-5pm. This holiday brings families and communities together to share their love and respect for their departed loved ones. SJMA Community Day festivities celebrate the diversity of Silicon Valley and embrace both old and new inter-cultural traditions. Event is free. Children’s Musical Theater’s Seussical (Nov. 11-20) -- The Cat in the Hat is back at the Montgomery Theater. Don't miss CMT's version of this recent Broadway hit which brings beloved Dr. Seuss storybook characters like Horton, the Grinch and Yertle the Turtle together in an imaginative story. Opera San Jose presents a double-bill: Pagliacci and La voix humaine, California Theatre, Downtown San José (Nov. 12-27): Opera San José continues its 28th season with Leoncavallo’s emotionally powerful Pagliacci in a double bill with Poulenc’s French monodrama La voix humaine. FESTIVALS (Sports & Music)

¡VivaFest!  San Jose Mexican Heritage and Mariachi Festival (Sept. 18-29) – This signature San Jose event, celebrating its 20th anniversary, celebrates the city’s rich Mexican heritage with the largest festival of its type in the nation. Featuring music and dance workshops, including the Festival’s first “mariachi college bowl,” special events, outdoor celebrations and performances by music legends such as Vikki Carr and Los Lobos’ Cesar Rosas, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles and the Mariachi Cobre. New this year: “Once Upon A Time, Érase Una Vez,” a mariachi musical with the legendary Vikki Carr and Los Lobos’ Cesar Rosas will premier at ¡VivaFest! Sept. 25 at the HP Pavilion; and Mariachi Nuevo Tecatitlan will also make their first appearance in Northern California from Guadalajara. This family-oriented event of music, film, arts and educational events draws more than 50,000 people to the heart of Silicon Valley each year. Tech Museum Hosts Film Screenings for ¡VivaFest!  San Jose Mexican Heritage and Mariachi Festival ( Sept. 18-29) -- To welcome an elaborate celebration marking the 20th Annual San Jose Mexican Heritage and Mariachi Festival, The Tech Museum will swing open its doors for the renowned fiesta, blending the world of science with Mexican music and film with a series of film screenings and mariachi workshops.  All films will be screened in The Hackworth IMAX ® Dome Theater located in The Tech Museum, including the Northern California premier of Eva Longoria’s film “The Harvest,” which is a documentary about children farm workers, directed by Roberto Romano. Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon/Health & Fitness Expo presented by Power Balance (Sept. 30-Oct. 2) - For two days, more than 60 exhibitors at the San Jose Convention Center will offer free samples, showcase the latest in running gear, sports apparel, health & nutritional information and much more. Pick up some last-minute race essentials before race day and be sure to visit the Brooks Official Merchandise Store. Harvest Festival Original Art & Craft Show (Nov. 25-27) --  One of the largest indoor art & craft shows on the West Coast, this festival features hundreds of artisans exhibiting American handmade items including beautiful jewelry, clothing, specialty foods, photography, original art, hand-turned wood, music, ceramics and much more.
