San Jose McEnery Conventio Center to Debut $130 Million Makeover at Free Community Day
City and Team San Jose Officials -- along with Hunt Construction and Populous –to celebrate the official grand opening of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center’s recent $130 million renovation and expansion on Oct. 10 at a special Community Day event. The new Convention Center offers 125,000 square feet of additional flexible ballroom and meeting room space, increasing the facility’s space to 550,000 square feet of usable space and making San Jose more competitive as a meetings and events destination. Team San Jose has already secured 178 new business opportunities using the expanded space, a third of which are new to San Jose.
“The ‘new’ San Jose Convention Center marks advances Downtown San Jose’s position as a premier convention destination and will help San Jose attract even more local, national and international events to spur economic activity and generate new tax revenues for our community,” Mayor Chuck Reed said. “I’d like to thank San Jose hoteliers for financing this project and all the other partners who made this project possible.”
The Convention Center’s grand opening festivities kick off with a free public Community Day celebration on Oct. 10, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. where the community and residents will experience the new facility while enjoying entertainment, games, raffles and snacks. Mayor Chuck Reed will lead a grand opening ceremony Silicon Valley style by hosting the “technology debut” of Idea Tree at the Convention Center that night at 6:45 p.m. The completion of the Convention Center’s renovation and expansion signifies Downtown San Jose’s ongoing revitalization efforts – including hotels and theaters – that give groups and visitors new reasons to choose San Jose as a business and leisure destination.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the grand-reopening of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center,” said Michael Mulcahy, chairman of the board for Team San Jose and managing partner of SDS NexGen Partners. “The Convention Center has a track record of successfully hosting a wide range of events and we are confident the expanded and renovated venue will deliver strong economic results for San Jose and allow Team San Jose to deliver on its mission to put more heads in beds, butts in seats and feet on San Jose streets.”
The recently installed public artwork of Idea Tree, which provides an iconic, artistic, interactive and technology driven element to the main convention center entrance is a gateway for conference attendees and visitors to network. Additional key Convention Center features include: revamped lobby with sit steps where convention attendees can plug in and network between sessions; new networking lounge; more breakout rooms; additional flexible meeting spaces; event spaces with beautiful bright California colors including reclaimed redwood ceilings; modern high-tech feel – with the state-of-the-art Silicon Valley infrastructure to back it up; and a new open plaza entrance facing Downtown San Jose perfect for networking and outdoor event hosting.
“The remodeled Convention Center will attract bigger events and ensure that Team San Jose clients will keep returning and growing with us,” said Karolyn Kirchgesler, Team San Jose’s CEO. “I am excited to celebrate one of the city’s latest marquee developments to attract meetings and conventions, welcome new visitors to our community and contribute to the vibrancy of Downtown.”
In addition to celebrating its new and improved look, the Convention Center was recently recognized as a Structures Awards winner for Best Public/Civic Project by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, an award going to schools, civic structures and transportation links in Silicon Valley.
The Convention Center’s $130 million renovation and expansion project was funded through a dedicated hotel tax voted by San Jose hoteliers in 2009 to help improve San Jose’s long-term competitiveness and increase business for hotels and other businesses near the center, such as theaters, restaurants, museums and nightlife. By legal requirement, the tax can only be used to support capital improvements at the Convention Center and includes ongoing revenue for future capital needs.
Team San Jose boosts economic growth by attracting conventions, meetings, leisure and business travelers to the area, securing over 314 events, attracting over one million visitors to the Convention Center, and generating $86.1M in visitor spending for Fiscal Year 2012-2013.
