The Alameda Artworks Silicon Valley Open Studios
Art lovers, curious explorers, and weekend wanderers are invited to step inside an active working studio collective during the annual Silicon Valley Open Studios event. For one weekend only, May 16-17 from 11 am – 5 pm each day, visitors can meet the artists, experience their creative spaces, and discover a wide range of artwork across many media.
Nestled in the heart of the bustling Alameda Business District, The Alameda Artworks Open Studios event offers a rare opportunity to see where art actually happens. Some artists will provide behind-the-scenes glimpses into their creative processes—demonstrating techniques, sharing works in progress, and discussing the stories behind their pieces. Others will highlight upcoming classes and workshops, offering visitors the chance to continue their creative journey beyond the weekend.
Most of the artwork on display will be available for purchase—making it a wonderful chance to bring home something original and support local artists. At the same time, visitors are warmly encouraged to come simply to explore, ask questions, and enjoy the creative atmosphere.
Celebrating 35-years since its founding, The Alameda Artworks is a hidden gem along The Alameda. Located behind Recycle Bookstore and in two adjacent buildings, the mural-bedecked walls hint at the creativity inside. The studios are located in a lively business district surrounded by cafés, restaurants, bakeries, a bookstore, and other local shops—making it easy to turn your visit into a full day of discovery. Whether seeking inspiration, looking to add to a collection, or simply indulging in a day of cultural enrichment, Silicon Valley Open Studios at The Alameda Artworks promises a meaningful experience for all.
This event is family friendly and wheelchair accessible, located near public transit, with bike racks in front, and free parking behind the Recycle bookstore. Join as we celebrate 35-years of creativity, community, and the power of art to inspire and unite.
Diverse and Engaging Artwork
From steel sculptures to luminous watercolors, expressive oil and acrylic paintings, intricate textiles, and handcrafted jewelry, the studios will be alive with color, texture, and inspiration. Visitors will encounter artworks exploring everything from California landscapes and wildlife to abstract compositions, figurative work, environmental themes, and whimsical beings from the artists’ imaginations.
About The Alameda Artworks
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the founding of The Alameda Artworks Studios, a collective of studios in three buildings that previously served as a municipal building for meetings and conferences, a roller rink and a car repair facility. In 1991 Falko Forbrich purchased the buildings and converted them to artist studios. The beautifully refinished hardwood floors in the wide hall are the original surface on which San Jose skaters happily whirled. The Forbrich Family continues the tradition of supporting local culture by offering affordable workspace to local artists. The Alameda Art Works now boasts one of the largest, most diverse and lively artists’ communities in the Bay Area. Over 45 artists work in oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, pastels, glass, jewelry, fiber, and photography. Several times each year visitors can stroll through the maze-like spaces of the Alameda Artworks to view and purchase original, local art in the place where it was created.
