California Theatre

California Theatre

The California Theatre is a beautiful 1927 landmark in downtown San Jose and a must-visit destination for arts, culture and entertainment. Originally opened as the Fox Theatre, this 1,122-seat movie palace was designed by renowned architects Weeks and Day and once welcomed Hollywood stars, vaudeville performances, and groundbreaking films. After closing in 1973, the theatre was beautifully restored in 2001, preserving its ornate plasterwork, chandeliers, and distinctive architecture while adding modern amenities. Today, it is home to Opera San Jose and Symphony San Jose and hosts concerts, dance, film screenings and special events. Just two blocks from the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, the California Theatre offers visitors a memorable way to experience San Jose’s history and vibrant arts scene.
