Conservation efforts for trails, parks and wildlife
Guadalupe River Park Conservancy
In the urban environment of Downtown, the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy is working to preserve the natural ecology of the trails, parks and plazas of the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens. The Guadalupe River Park runs through the downtown core, providing residents and visitors a way to unwind, unplug and connect with nature. Efforts to further bridge the gap between the trails and park to Downtown include the addition of several murals along the trail from San Jose Walls – moving towards creating the longest public art trail in the Bay Area.
Happy Hollow continues to embrace various nature and wildlife conservation programs within its zoo, as well as several sustainability initiatives for the city of San Jose. The AZA-accredited zoo is home to many threatened or critically endangered species and participates in the Species Survival Plan. Other community efforts include pollinator programs, educational events on the importance of conservation, and sustainable dining and catering options at the zoo's Picnic Basket.
Business highlight: Academic Coffee
Academic Coffee has continued to be a sustainability leader in the San Jose business community. In addition to using compostable cups, straws, and utensils in their Downtown café, Academic Coffee roasts their beans in electric, zero-emission roasting machines. Academic fosters community composting partnerships with Veggielution and Our City Forest, setting an example for other businesses and the city of San Jose at large.
The City of San Jose has long been a leader in sustainability and climate-forward policy, and is always striving to adopt more green initiatives.
